Yet another sensible voice raised against the ban on federal funding of needle exchange programmes. The Boston Globe editorial even includes the mandatory “We know it works” quote. What it doesn’t mention is that an end to the ban within the US would probably have a very important knock-on effect internationally, because it would open the door to US funding for needle and syringe programmes in the huge, populous countries of Asia and eastern Europe, where drug injection is the main engine driving the HIV epidemic. But I’m wondering if all editorials and blog posts that entreat Bush to listen to the evidence shouldn’t be accompanied by a donation to a hearing aid fund. Because all these sensible voices seem to be falling on deaf ears…
