    Ah, those were the days. I am happy to own a copy of T.M. Griffiths’s compendium “Non-Secret Recipes”. It’s full of recipes for the corner drugstore (and the farmer); mine is the 1910 edition, featuring as an appendix the text of the then just-passed Pure Food and Drug Law.

    The book is playing hard to find just at the moment, so I can’t check whether it has any recipes incorporating anything so new-fangled as Heroin. But here are some of my previously transcribed favorites.

    Suppositories for Piles
    Ext. ergot. (solid) …… 2 grains
    Ext. Opii ……………. 1/4 grains
    Ext. nuc. vom…………. 1/4 grains
    Cocain. hydroclor……… 1/4 grains
    Ol. theobrom………….. q.s.
    Ft. suppositoria.
    Mitte 12.
    (Rub down the extracts and cocaine on a warm slab, and gradually add the ol. theobrom., which should only be just melted, return to the suppository-bath, pouring into the mould as soon as liquefied, using the least possible heat.)

    For Painful Piles and Vaginitis
    (Journ. Med. and Science.)
    Ext. aconite ………….. 1/8 grain
    Ext. belladonna ……….. 1/8 grain
    Ext. hydrastis …………. 1 grain
    Ext. lobelia …………… 3 grains
    Cacao butter …………… enough
    Make one suppository.

    Pile Suppositories
    Iodoform ……………… 30 grains
    Extract belladonna……… 3 grains
    Morphine sulphate……..1 1/2 grains
    Cacao butter………….. 180 grains
    Mix, and make twelve suppositories.

    Pile suppositories.
    Ext. witch hazel, powd….. 60 grains
    Tannin ……………….. 12 grains
    Opium ………………… 4 grains
    Cacao butter …………. 180 grains
    Mix, and make twelve suppositories.

    The first one in particular seems like it might almost make piles pleasant–if it didn’t kill you.

    He also has a recipe for “asthma cigarettes” compounded of tobacco and Jimson weed.
